A BREAK FROM TRADITION Teacher talks. Student listens. This is different. North Daviess Community Schools is working towards implementing a New Technology High School model to embrace 21st Century Learning through Project Based Learning. This will require a complete restructuring of how we educate our students and will move towards a 9 th-12 th grade 21st Century Learning Model. The program will be a replication of the New Tech model provided by the New Tech Foundation (www.newtechfoundation.org). In closing remarks at a recent conference, Indiana State Superintendent of Public Instruction Suellen Reed made it clear that New Technology’s path for providing the education needed by today’s high school students is a path to take. “We’ve talked about New Tech High and what an exciting concept that is and how many schools are going to be able to be involved in that in the future as well as the ones that are currently involved,” Reed said. She told the crowd of how she’d gone to the new New Tech schools in Indiana and talked with students who were so obviously engaged in their school work and enjoying the process that they didn’t consider it work. “That’s the way learning ought to be,” she said, in a hearty endorsement of the New Tech High School model. New Technology model is a technology-rich school design focused on graduating students with mastery of 21st-century knowledge and skills. The model employs a rigorous curriculum that embeds learning outcomes in all projects and assignments. New Technology Foundation (NTF) leads schools through the process of establishing unique learning outcomes. This happens through staff discussion to gain buy-in, understanding and commitment to the model.
